The oxygen in a galaxy does not sit still. It spreads, thins out, piles up, and leaves behind a record of where stars formed, where gas moved, and when smaller galaxies crashed in.

The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image of Messier 64, also known as the Black Eye Galaxy or the Evil Eye Galaxy. The image has been captured in ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared frequencies.
