At the time of initial greeting, petting a dog on top of the head is an absolute NO! Reaching over the head to pet a dog is not only poor etiquette, it is often perceived as a dominant form of interaction. Ever go to a dog park and see a dog greet another dog by walking straight up while staring into the eyes of the dog he’s greeting and then, put his paw up on top of the head to give him a nice scratch?!
