A very special sighting of a BASKING SHARK for us, on our Santa Cruz Island trip Sunday! Kristin Campell captured this rare drone video of this shark "grazing" on zooplankton, mouth wide open. The population of Basking Shaks in the Eastern North Pacific is as low as 300-500 animals, and they are sighted only periodically in southern California. Stick your nose up! When the zooplankton is plentiful, basking sharks can feed hard at the surface. They move erratically around the thickest spots of food and is spectacular to watch. In this clip whilst watching from a distance the shark turns to feed close to the boat. It was also a strong year for mackerel and a school of them are ‘boiling’ at the surface whilst they are feeding. We’re looking forward to some days like this in the summer! | Basking Shark Scotland
