Creature of the day: The Basking Shark 🦈 🦈 The basking shark is the second-largest living shark and fish, after the whale shark. It is one of three plankton-eating shark species, along with the whale shark and megamouth shark. Typically, basking sharks reach 7.9 m in length, but large individuals have been known to grow more than 10 m long (33 ft). Basking sharks feed on tiny animals in the ocean, such plankton, as well as fish eggs, jellyfish, and crustaceans. They filter huge volumes of wate

A very special sighting of a BASKING SHARK for us, on our Santa Cruz Island trip Sunday! Kristin Campell captured this rare drone video of this shark "grazing" on zooplankton, mouth wide open. The population of Basking Shaks in the Eastern North Pacific is as low as 300-500 animals, and they are sighted only periodically in southern California. Historical estimates were as high as 3,000-5,000, but their populations have not recovered despite decades since any significant harvesting. | Pacific Of

Stick your nose up! When the zooplankton is plentiful, basking sharks can feed hard at the surface. They move erratically around the thickest spots of food and is spectacular to watch. In this clip whilst watching from a distance the shark turns to feed close to the boat. It was also a strong year for mackerel and a school of them are ‘boiling’ at the surface whilst they are feeding. We’re looking forward to some days like this in the summer! | Basking Shark Scotland

Janavi Kramer on Instagram: "This is a Basking Shark: The Gentle Giant of the Sea! Did you know the Basking Shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second-largest fish in the world, reaching up to 10 meters in length? Despite their immense size, these gentle giants are harmless to humans - they’re filter feeders, gracefully gliding through the water while consuming vast amounts of plankton. In fact, they can filter an astounding 130,000 gallons of water per hour! But this behaviour is more than just i
