Introducing new green and amber LED lights for our snowplows! They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Well, after noticing other states implementing green lights into their snowplow fleets, we decided to follow suit in an effort to improve the safety of both our operators and the traveling public. These new lights are six times brighter than the old ones, making them distinguishable and much easier to see. While you will likely see our new “green lit” plows if you travel through the

A growing state needs a smart transportation future – and rail is key. In the next two decades, millions more people will call this state home and demand for efficient, sustainable transportation will be greater than ever. That’s why WSDOT is updating the State Rail Plan. This provides guidance for how passenger and freight trains can help reduce congestion, enhance community safety and support economic and environmental goals. UPDATE: 4:15 p.m. Thursday, November 2: The overnight closure of eastbound SR 518 scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 14 has been postponed. The closure will now be from 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21. ORIGINAL POST: Good news for SeaTac residents living north of the airport, and airport employees! The 24th Avenue South bridge over SR 518 is back open. The bridge closed in early August while we replaced a girder damaged when it was hit by an over-height vehicle in 2020. Our contractor

One of the busiest areas for our snowplow drivers this week was around I-90 in the Spokane area. Here's a close-up view of our crews working to clear snow and ice. It's going to be a long winter so please continue to keep road crews safe. Slow down, be patient, give them room and let them help you get where you're going safely! | WSDOT

MONSTER WEEKEND INCOMING! We’re a little more than 24 hours away from FIVE closures taking place in the Seattle metro area along I-5, I-405, SR 167, SR 520 and Mercer Street (on-ramps to I-5). Yes, it’s going to be tough, even for us (we use these roads, too!) But, if you plan ahead, give yourself plenty of time, remember monsters aren't really real and consider transit options (especially if you’re heading into Seattle), there are ways to get through this scare-free! This PSA will tell you more

Building a highway underneath Seattle With a time-lapse camera mounted 54-feet high, you almost get a bird’s-eye view of work inside Seattle’s SR 99 tunnel. As the tunneling machine Bertha builds the tunnel, road crews are right behind – building the foundations, walls and the top deck of the double-deck highway drivers will travel on when the tunnel opens. Take a look. | WSDOT

Reminder! Plan for significant daytime delays approaching the State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 15. The bridge will reduce to one lane of travel while we replace a 16-foot hydraulic cylinder. We have to close one lane during the work for the large crane needed to lift the 6,000-pound piece of equipment out and replace it with a new one. We’re working in a tight space close to other critical parts on the bridge and need daylight to see. In this instance, the overhea

Is it getting steamy in here or is that just the asphalt? 🥵 Come along for a look behind the scenes of a paving glow up on this stretch of I-5 near Olympia in August. It was part of the 82 miles of fresh, sparkly asphalt that crews laid around the South Sound and Kitsap Peninsula this summer. We hope you enjoy a smoother ride. 😎 We were busy aaaaall around the state this summer, to the tune of repairing 1.8 million square feet of pavement around Washington. I’m no mathematician, but that’s a l

A look at some of the conditions and collisions on I-90 Snoqualmie Pass last week. Between Jan. 24-27, we measured 52 inches of new snowfall, including 20 on Jan. 24 alone. While our snowplows work hard to keep the roadway open, that much snow means the roads won't be clear. But many of these collisions could be avoided by slowing down and adhering to restriction requirements like chains. We certainly aren't done with snow in the mountains this season so please be safe and cautious up there! | W

It was a long month, Seattle. Here’s what we were up to. Enjoying a smoother drive over a stretch of the northbound lanes over the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge? That was a big part of the work we did during the month-long lane reductions. That work included replacing more than 900 feet of bridge deck with new concrete, installing 94 new drains to reduce water pooling and replacing bridge expansion joints. Oh snap! Thank you to all the adjustments made by you, the travelers, to keep the region moving du

She’s an icon. She’s a lid. And she is the moment. From girders and deck pours to trails, trees, and a new transit hub, the 3-acre Montlake Lid’s glow up is complete, and she’s serving big lid energy. 😎 The SR 520 Montlake Project’s added a park on top of SR 520. But wait, there’s more! A 73-foot-wide bike and pedestrian bridge, almost a mile of new trail connections, direct-access ramps for HOV 3 and transit across Lake Washington, aaaaaaand lots of greenspace for the neighborhood. Since northbound I-5 opened in downtown Seattle in the 1960s, there’s been two through mainline lanes along this stretch past Seneca Street. Working within our existing roadway, we moved existing barrier and restriped to create a third through lane to try and improve mobility along this section of freeway. We know we can’t improve traffic by just creating lanes, so this is part of a bigger project that includes new ramp meters, additional electronic roadway signs and adding another exit-only lan

Technically anything can be a boat…once. But unless you’re James Bond, if you try to turn your car into a boat, there’s a really good chance it will never go back to being a car again. Last night’s heavy rainfall flooded several roads and highways around the state (and there’s more to come!). Now’s a good time to remember that six inches of water is enough to stall a vehicle, and one foot of water is enough to make you lose control of your vehicle. When in doubt, if you can’t see the road, don’t

Tiny scenes from the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle, where the largest preservation project in Washington is well underway. Want to know what crews have been up to since we started work in mid January? Keep reading! Crews first set up the work zone and shifted traffic so we could safely get to the bridge deck. Then we completed milling - that’s when we grind off the top layer of old, worn concrete to remove damage and get down to a solid surface. Now we’re in hydro-demolition, which uses high-

FINAL 12:30 p.m. I-90 Snoqualmie Pass is back open in both directions. UPDATE 11:41 a.m.: Eastbound Snoqualmie Pass is open. Hoping to get westbound open shortly. ORIGINAL POST: While both directions of I-90 Snoqualmie Pass remain closed after unprepared drivers crashed, blocking the road and damaging concrete barriers, our crews on US 2 Stevens Pass continue to work to keep that highway plowed. This video is a good example of what plowing is, and isn't. When our crews plow, they are working to
