Known as “the Swiss Machine,” Steck's solo speed-climbing feats in the Alps are the stuff of legend . Carpenter from profession, he climbed the Eiger North Face for the first time when he was 18 years old. He made new speed records in the North Face Trilogy, climbing Grandes Jorasses in 2 hours 21 minutes, Matterhorn in 1 hour 56 minutes and Eiger in 2 hours and 47 minutes. .
